Opteron™ Processor |
|
Sun has
introduced its dual processor Sun Fire V20z server, first in a
new line of AMD Opteron™ processor-based servers from Sun,
delivering high performance, reliability, and scalability in a
ultra-dense, rack-optimized 1U form factor. With a single
architecture, the Sun Fire V20z server supports both 32-bit
and 64-bit computing, allowing you to maintain your existing
x86 infrastructure while still enabling a smooth migration to
next-generation 64-bit operating systems and applications.
Featuring an
integrated memory controller, up to 16 GB of memory, up to two
Ultra320 SCSI hard drives, dual on-board Gigabit Ethernet, and
Lights Out Management, the Sun Fire V20z server offers
compelling price/performance and is ideal for a wide range of
applications, including high-performance technical computing,
Web or application serving, database management, and grid
computing.
The Sun
Fire V20z server also offers exceptional flexibility and
choice through support of multiple operating systems,
including 64-bit Red Hat and SUSE Linux, as well as 32-bit Red
Hat Linux. The Solaris Operating System (x86 Platform Edition)
is expected to be available in 32-bit in the March 2004
timeframe.

Get Ready for Low-Power AMD
Opteron™ Processors |
 |
|
AMD now offers the AMD Opteron™ processors HE (55 watt) and
EE (30 watt) for servers and workstations. These Low-Power
processors will bring AMD64 technology to a broad range of
server, workstation and non-traditional enterprise
products.
• The AMD Opteron processor HE (55 watt)
offers industry-leading performance per watt* making it an
ideal solution for rack-dense 1U servers or blades in
datacenter environments as well as cooler, quieter workstation
designs. • The AMD Opteron processor EE (30 watt) provides
maximum I/O bandwidth in a single-CPU controller making it a
good fit for embedded controllers in markets such as NAS and
SAN.
AMD Opteron processors HE and EE continue to offer
the leading-edge performance of AMD64 technology and deliver
substantially lower power consumption for increased compute
density.
* Based on the industry standard SPEC®
CPU2000 benchmark

Now Available - Pre-release Version of
Windows® XP 64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit Extended
Systems |
 |
|
Windows® XP 64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit Extended Systems
provides high performance for both 32-bit and 64-bit
applications on the same system. The underlying architecture
is based on 64-bit extensions to the industry-standard x86
instruction set, allowing today's 32-bit applications to run
natively on 64-bit extended processors such as AMD Athlon 64.
At the same time, new 64-bit applications are executed in
64-bit mode, which processes more data per clock cycle, allows
greater access to memory, and speeds numeric calculations. The
end result is a platform that leverages the existing wealth of
32-bit applications while also providing a smooth migration
path to 64-bit computing. Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit
Extended Systems is currently under development, with delivery
scheduled expected for the second half of 2004.
